Thấm thoát đã 6 tháng kể từ ngày em nhập ngũ, anh mới biên bức thư này cho em. Em có khỏe không? Vẫn học tập và rèn luyện tốt chứ? Anh và ba mẹ đều khỏe, ba đã cai được tật nghiện rượu, giờ 1 năm ông chỉ uống 2 lần vào các dịp quan trọng, mỗi lần 6 tháng, còn tuyệt ai mời cũng không bén 1 giọt. Mẹ cũng đã cai được thuốc lá sau lần tàn thuốc làm cháy chuồng gà chọi của em. 3 con bị thiêu chết, nhưng anh cũng kịp cứu con gà mà em cưng nhất. Con gà khỏe lắm, lúc ba cắt cổ để mừng đám cháy không ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng tới gian nhà chính nó giãy như điên, đạp đổ cả bát tiết. Vì em đang ở xa, nên anh được 2 cái đùi mà không ai tranh giành cả. Tuy nhiên lông gà làm tắc cống ở nhà dưới, nước thải dềnh lên rồi tràn vào phòng em làm hỏng đôi loa thùng, cuốn trôi toàn bộ giấy tờ tùy thân và sổ tiết kiệm của em. Cũng may ba nhanh trí đã bê được dàn máy vi tính của em ra ngoài, sau đó kêu má ngâm nước xà bông và đánh bóng để nó đẹp đẽ như lúc em đi. Thời tiết thất thường, ba lại bị chứng thấp khớp kinh niên hành hạ. Do bác sỹ dặn không được đi bộ quá lâu nên ba phải chạy suốt, cũng mệt mỏi lắm.
Còn nữa, nội vẫn nhắc em luôn, tuy nội già nhưng vẫn còn minh mẫn lắm, chỉ quên tên em đúng 1 lần lúc nội làm di chúc. Còn về phần anh, anh cũng đã tìm được công việc mới. Ngày đầu tiên đi làm anh hồi hộp tới mức ủi cháy cái quần của bộ vest mà ba cho, rồi anh chợt nhớ ra em cũng có cái quần mới i hệt như thế, nên cắt 1 miếng để vá vào quần anh, khéo đến nỗi nếu không nhìn kĩ sẽ không phát hiện ra. Suýt chút nữa anh quên, con bé Nếp bồ em vẫn qua thăm ba mẹ luôn, con bé tốt lắm. Vì yêu em nên nó quyết định cưới anh để tiện phụng dưỡng cho ba mẹ, dự định tháng 7 âm này sẽ cử hành hôn lễ, nếu em về dự được thì tốt quá. Thôi thư cũng đã dài, anh xin dừng bút ở đây, nếu không nhận được thư này thì nhớ báo cho anh biết để anh biên lại thư khác cho em.

Anh thân mến, em đã nhận được thư anh gởi cho em. Em rất vui vì
những thông tin mà anh báo cho em. Trước khi nhập ngũ đàn gà chọi của em
đã có dấu hiệu bị nhiễm H5N1, nhưng vì thương tụi nó quá nên em cũng
không nỡ giết, nay nghe tin tụi nó bị chết cháy cũng an ủi phần nào. Âu

buồn, nhưng anh yên tâm với giấy giới thiệu của thủ trưởng của em, em
nghĩ rằng làm lại những thứ đó không mất quá nhiều thời gian.
Việc nội thỉnh thoảng lơ đãng mất trí nhớ thì em cũng không nghĩ là điều
bất ngờ, hi vọng rằng khi viết di chúc nội cũng để lại cho ba phần nào
đó tài sản. Và em cũng báo cho anh một tin để anh đừng ái náy về việc
này, trước khi nhập ngũ, ba đã làm di chúc để lại toàn bộ tài sản cho
em, có sự đồng thuận của mẹ, hiện nay em đang giữ tờ di chúc đó bên
mình, nên anh yên tâm là sẽ không có chuyện bị nước cuốn trôi đâu.
Anh cưới em Nếp vào cuối tháng 7 âm lịch à? Em hi vọng rằng anh tổ chức
sớm hơn, vì em khoản cách đây 1 tháng, em có xin phép thủ trưởng về thăm
gia đình 2 ngày, nhưng em không về thăm gia đình mà mướn phòng nghỉ ở
cùng em Nếp. Em nghĩ rằng anh em mình rất giống nhau, nên khi Nếp sinh
con mọi người sẽ không phân biệt đứa bé con anh hay con em. Em xin chúc
anh chị trăm năm hạnh phúc.

I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to worry. But he replied to me sadly. 'No, Santa Claus can't bring it to her where she is now. 'I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose.'' 'My mommy loves white roses.' A few minutes later, the old lady returned and I left with my basket. I finished my shopping in a totally different state of mind from when I started. I couldn't get the little boy out of my mind. Then I remembered a local newspaper article two days ago, which mentioned a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl. The little girl died right away and the mother was left in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life-sustaining machine because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma. Was this the family of the little boy? Two days after this encounter with the little boy I read in the newspaper that the young woman had passed away. I couldn't stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was for people to see and make last wishes before her burial. She was there, in her coffin, holding a beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest. I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed forever. The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine, and in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him.
