We have an 116 years old Dam, in an extremely DANGEROUS, deteriorated condition (in the state of Kerala) made of lime stone and surkhi (technology of 19th century), actually built with an expected life span of just 50 years, in an area with frequent recent earthquakes. OUR DEMAND IS TO ALLOW US TO REBULD THIS DAM…, which outsiders are opposing by playing regional politics
Our state is so densely populated (with 33 million on a small land) and this inevitable mishap will result in the washing of four districts in Kerala into Arabian ocean, with 3 million lifes, major cities, infrastructure, properties along with the unique cultural and natural diversity of the Gods own country. We are helplessly waiting in sleepless nights and this is a TIME BOMB, that is ticking…
Current threatening situation
From 1979 onwards, due to earthquake and cracks developed on the Dam, Kerala has expressed concerns on the safety of Dam. Recently the deterioration on the dam is to such a level that many major institutions including IIT s, have reported the dam as unsafe and potentially hazardous, and advised to decommission the Dam. The reason behind the current panic, in the people in Kerala is due to frequent earth quakes in the region during past few months clocking to magnitude greater than four in Richter scale and new major cracks and leaks that has developed on the Dam and the Dam is at the verge of breaking.
Kerala just wants permission from Indian Central Government to build a new dam at the same place in Kerala’s own land (against Tamilnadu’ s opposition) and secure three million lifes and properties. Kerala has no issues in giving water to Tamilnadu, as it has continued for 116 years (as per agreement made during British) or more water if they want. But Tamilnadu is not allowing to build new dam, and putting pressure on the Indian government not to allow Kerala, as Tamilnadu fears, the contract made for 999 years to give water from Kerala to Tamilnadu from present dam, will be void by making new dam. And for this they are using their increased political bargaining strength on the central Indian Government. Also the politicians are using this situation to make race discrimination between two sates and gain benefits by playing dangerous regional politics.
Disastrous Results of the inevitable Dam break
4 districts in Kerala, with population of total 3 million will be washed off into Arabian sea. Will lead to breaking of a chain of dams down to Mullaperiyar, including one of the biggest arch dams in Asia (Idukki) resulting in unpredictable disaster. The magnitude of the energy burst is estimated to be 180 times more powerful than that of the Atom Bomb in Hiroshima. The infrastructure of the complete state would be devastated with no power, transport, industries for years, as this directly washes off Kerala’s main power station, sea port, airport, Cochin City etc. Impact on agriculture, drinking water supply and power generation in southern Tamilnadu, Impact of a disaster on the general economy of Kerala and Tamilnadu. Impact on flora and fauna including endangered species and on Tourism, as Kerala’s major tourist stations will be no more.
History
The Mullaperiyar Dam is a 116 year old gravity dam made in 1895 by the British Government in “Kerala” across river “Periyar” with lime stone and surkhi (old age technology) with an expected life span of 50 years and has a height of 53.6 m (176 ft) and length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft) and lies 881 m (2,890 ft) above sea level on the Cardamom Hills of Western Ghats in Thekkadi, Idukki District of Kerala, India. It was built by British, for taking water into the neighboring state of “Tamilnadu” for irrigation in some their districts. That time ruler in Kerala (Maharaja of Travancore) was forced by British empire; to sign an agreement, to lease the land of dam reservoir and give water to Tamilnadu. The agreement was to give 8000 acres (32,374,851square meters) of land for the reservoir and another 100 acres to construct the dam. And the tax for each acre was Rupees 5 (0.097 $) per year. When India became independent, the lease agreement expired and got revalidated again in 1970 and Tamilnadu is taking water from this Dam in Kerala for past 116 Years without any objection and we don’t have any objection now too. Please allow us to build a new dam, take the water, but same time allow us to save our life too.

Christina Slason I was at the store buying a bag of Purina dog chow for my dog , in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. Why else would I be buying dog chow, RIGHT ??? So on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again, and that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in intensive care, with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and all you do is load your pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle's butt and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard. Better watch what you ask me and be prepared for my answer. I have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say........ now that you've read it I have to confess, I copied it from someone else.
